In 2007, Tom Allen and Andy Welch dreamt about seeing the world on their mountain bikes. Departing from the UK June 2007, the duo set off on their bikes with video recorders to document the adventure. And so, Ride Earth was born.

Tom’s affinity for nature and cycling began at an early age when he would spend much of his time in a backyard retreat in the garden of his home. With his apt for a cyclist stamina and his enthusiasm for being a responsible citizen of the world, the planning stages for a ride around the earth began in 2003 when a friend from university was doing the same sort of trip but on a train. Tom thought it was the perfect way to see the world in a way that is often missed by most travellers – via mountain bike through the countrysides of various countries.

Ride Earth

Two of Andy’s great loves is also the outdoors and mountain biking. At the age of 15, Andy was exposed to mountain bikes and hasn’t looked back since. During a 4-month mountain biking guide on the island of Korcula in 2005, Andy was able to genuinely connect to the local people and tried to do so with as much respect to their heritage and culture as possible. Since then Andy’s sense for adventure and discover is full of force.

The cycling duo isn’t just riding around the world for kicks and giggles. With their ride, Tom and Andy are helping to raise funds for The Wilderness Foundation UK and have become ambassadors for Wheels 4 Life. The Wilderness Foundation is dedicated to the preservation and protection “the last of the world’s wild places.” With each step, the Foundation works towards exposing the true value of the wilderness to individuals and what it can offer them.

This adventure, Tom sets out to Outer Mongolia where in efforts to raise funds for The Wilderness Foundation, you can have your very own postcard sent to you! Check out Tom’s latest blog post where you can make a donation of any amount and he will send a postcard your way. Visit the donation page here, then go back to Tom’s post and leave a comment with your address (or send him a private note).

The original idea behind Ride Earth was to explore the environments of the world on mountain-bikes. This is the essence of my motivation to ride across the vast wilderness of Mongolia. I’m a huge evangelist for this method of getting a grasp on how the world looks and works away from the screens. If you can make that first big step away from the rush of normal life in order to do it, it’s one you’ll never regret. – Tom Allen
