What are you doing for Earth Day 2010?

Earth Day: the one day of the year when your inner hippie/tree hugger is allowed to run free. In 1970, the first Earth Day was celebrated by students wearing gas masks in New York City, rallies and other events to promote awareness of the preservation of the environment. Last year, National Geographic published a photo journal with photos from the first Earth Day in 1970 where you can flash back to your bell-bottom wearing days, or just get ideas for your next Halloween costume, “PHOTOS: The First Earth Day.”

Around the world events are happening to allow just that. Being so close to the Florida Keys, I like to take the drive down to either Key Largo or Islamorada where a few parks and lodges like the Cheeca Lodge and Spa are host to Earth Day celebrations from cookouts to sand sculpting. Traveling Greener, a green travel blog, has posted a few events going on in the Florida Keys, “Earth Day in the Florida Keys.” This year I might even take a trip to the Museum of Litter for their honouring of the 40th Earth Day.

Thanks to my friends in the WHL Group network, I’ve been able to round up some ideas and events around the world. Like in the Philippines where the celebrations have an early start of 5a.m. This year, people of the Philippines have the opportunity to join in on the Pasig River Fluvial Parade. Hosted by the Sagip Pasig Movement, community leaders, activists, friends and family take the celebration to the waters in a day long parade by boat.

If music is more your note, the Fes Sacred Music Festival has recently taken swing with special performances and educational activities for children. And of course, who couldn’t forget to plant trees like they are doing in South Africa?

There are sites on the internet to fill up hours of your time searching for events or things to do to honor Earth Day. Below is a shortened version with innovative ideas:
