Glympse, my favourite iPhone app

It was only a month ago that I was driving in South Africa with a GPS in the car and talking with Jan about how in-car GPS devices should allow you to share your location with friends and family, maybe some do, but none that I’m aware of.  The idea of allowing concerned parties to follow your progress along the road from their computer screen sounded too useful and too simple to not already be available in some way in conjunction with GPS devices.

Glympse - Share Your Where

A couple of days ago I found a new iPhone app for this that makes superb use of your data connection and the geolocating abilities of smartphones.  Glympse is a groundbreaking new way to share your location with anyone for a specified period of time, it relies on Google Maps, has a slick interface and is extremely easy to use.

Share by email, SMS, Twitter or Facebook

A link or ‘Glympse’ of your location can be sent from your iPhone either as an email, SMS or to Twitter or Facebook.  You can set your destination and the amount someone can track you.  The recipient receives a link that when opened up displays a Google map with a moving arrow head that displays your route, current speed and time until reaching your destination.

The next iPhone upgrade will further improve usability of the app

The downside at the moment is nothing to do with the application but rather the iPhone’s inability to run background tasks, which means the Glympse app must remain open for the tracking to continue.  Fortunately the new iPhone update will solve this issue.

I thoroughly recommend downloading Glympse for your Android phone, iPhone or Windows Mobile.
