Green Visions: Bosnia & Herzegovina

Very few people will consider spending their next holiday in post-war Bosnia & Herzegovina. Just mentioning the place conjures up memories of the devastating war that occurred in the 1990s. However, over the last decade significant development and improvements to the tourism infrastructure have taken place. It’s a destination with stunning nature, a fascinating blend of cultures, friendly people, UNESCO Heritage listed sites as well as world famous Balkan cuisine.  The capital Sarajevo is a cosmopolitan city with trendy bars and cafes. In the surrounding mountains and countryside of Sarajevo there are plenty of things to see and do. The 1984 Winter Olympics were held at Jahorina Resort and it’s one of the cheapest and least crowded skiing destinations in Europe.

Green Visions is based in Sarajevo and offers a variety of travel experiences for those wanting to see the nature and unique culture of Bosnia & Herzegovina. “We founded our company on the principles of balance and harmony between man and nature,” says Thierry Joubert of Green Visions, “We’ve pioneered a movement in creating alternative means of sustainable development while maintaining an eco-friendly approach to all that we do.” Green Visions were selected in 2008 as the local whl.travel partner in Sarajevo and with support from the World Bank/IFC Group, Thierry and his team have completed their travel portal at www.sarajevo-travel.ba.

In the small village of Nahoreva, Green Visions are working with the Municipality of Sarajevo and the local agricultural co-op of the village to set up a small Bed & Breakfast, as well as helping to design specific village-based tourism products, such as walking trails, handicrafts, and farm-stays. Most of these experiences are located just 10 minutes drive from the centre of Sarajevo.  Travellers can also hike out to the traditional Bosnian village of Lukomir where Green Visions have been promoting the preservation of the traditional ancient highland lifestyles. Working with the Ministry of Trade and Tourism, they are helping several families in Lukomir to equip their houses with traditionally crafted guest-beds and furniture and offering basic hospitality training. With old farming methods and a lifestyle long since forgotten in Europe, travellers can now rest in a unique environment whilst also providing economic support to the villagers.
