The Rocking Chair Test

howies started selling T-shirts out of a mountain biking magazine in 1995. It’s been a long and arduous journey to get to where they are today whilst maintaining their ethical approach to business.

The howies philosophy is simple. A higher quality product will invariably last longer, consuming less valuable resources than multiple replacements of an inferior product, therefore having less impact on the environment. They are based in Wales, UK.

A strong desire to make people think about the world we’re in is a major reason that howies are in business. They donate a small percentage of all their profits to grass-root environmental and social projects, and in an effort to keep themselves on the straight and narrow they rely on ‘the rocking chair test’.

“When we are old and grey and sitting in our rocking chairs, we can look back on the company we created with a smile.”

howies don’t answer to shareholders, they answer to friends. With common sense and a genuine concern for people and the environment, they have a business built to last.
